John Wilkinson: If I'm an investor in today's market, why should I follow advances in regenerative medicine?

Patrick Cox: Regenerative medicine is the most transformational technology to emerge in modern human history. It’s bigger than the internet, alternative energy and the global rise of personal computing.

JW: What monumental changes could advances in regenerative medicine bring in the next few years?

PC: Don't take my word for it. Let me cite Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who has been chosen by President Obama as Surgeon General.

Dr. Gupta says that, right now, stem cell therapies can rejuvenate heart and brain tissues, something that could never be done before.

This is, in fact true, and I've gotten my information not from Gupta but from the scientists who've made these discoveries and hold the patents.

JW: What kind of long term implications do advances in regenerative medicine hold for investors who purchase shares now - in early 2009?

PC: Think about the investors who bought Intel or Apple computer when they were fledgling company. One dollar has turned into $50. Ten thousand dollars has become $500,000.

But those companies were only selling computers and microchips. Regenerative medicine companies will sell radically extended, youthful and healthy life spans.

Which do you think is the bigger, more profitable product?

JW: What are iPS stem cells? How do they differ from "normal stem cells"?

PC: Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are functionally identical to the all-powerful embryonic stem cells.

They do not, however, come from embryos. They can be produced from a bit of your own blood or a skin sample.

It amazes me that people just aren't aware of the fact that it is possible, today, to turn a bit of skin into thousands of youthful cells that will replace the aging and injured cells in your body.

JW: Wow, that’s amazing. So why hasn't the mainstream media caught on to this lucrative story?

PC: There are four reasons.

1. This is partly an issue of supply and demand. The general public itself simply doesn't read complex scientific stories, so media outlets have never concentrated on those stories. Celebrity scandals and high-profile murders get far better ratings and make a lot more money.

2. Few if any editors of big media outlets have the education needed to understand and communicate breakthrough science issues.

3. We are in a period of rapidly accelerating scientific discovery. If it was difficult to understand and cover advances in science in the past, it is nearly impossible today.

4. These are not the best of times for the mainstream media. Big media, is in fact, failing. The New York Times just barely escaped bankruptcy last week due to an infusion of cash from a Mexican billionaire. They've been slashing staff and budgets for years. CNN recently fired its entire science, technology, and environment news staff. This is entirely due to scientific breakthroughs and technological changes in the way information is delivered.

I and others saw it coming years ago and said so repeatedly, but the media dinosaurs couldn't grasp or believe it.

If they couldn't comprehend the impact of scientific advances that threaten their very financial survival, should we be surprised that they have blown it in regards to even more complex scientific breakthroughs such as regenerative medicine?

JW: How does the Obama Administration benefit me, the potential biotech investor?

PC: There are several sectors that have been blocked by past administrations' policies.

Today, we have pent up repressed technologies like race horses rearing at the starting gate. They’re just waiting for a chance to run.

Fortunately for those needing this type of therapy AND the early investor, the Obama administration has pulled the trigger and opened the gate.

There are, by the way, a bunch of lame nags running in that same horse race. They’re good for nothing but the glue factory.

The right kind of stem cell companies, however, will be big winners. Bet on it.

JW: What does the appointment of Dr. Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General mean for biotech in the next four years?

PC: I've been hesitant, many times, to tell people what I knew about the recent breakthroughs in regenerative medicine.

This is because the truth is so amazing, people just don't believe me.

If I told you that, within a few decades, you will no longer have to grow feeble and die from old age, I suspect that you would have trouble believing me. And I don't blame you.

Dr. Gupta, however, has predicted exactly that and has pointed to stem cell sciences as the primary cause of this revolutionary change in human life.

He is already probably the best-known and trusted doctor in America.

If his appointment goes through and he takes on the official mantle of Surgeon General, he will have the public's attention and the credibility that comes with such a position.

People who would never listen to me will understand then what is happening in the field of regenerative medicine.

So let me ask you again what I asked above. What do you think the companies that sell these therapies will be worth? What will their stocks be worth?

Historically, there has never been an opportunity like this.

JW: Could we really be only years away from using stem cell therapy to acheive radically more effective treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's...?

PC: Yes.

Beyond stem cells or regenerative medicine, there are a whole raft of astonishing technologies coming to market.
