Geothermal’s Hidden Power Play: Greg Guenthner / July 10, 2007Many alternative energy enthusiasts are familiar with Calpine Corp. (CPNLQ. OB). Operating out of The Geysers in Northern California, Calpine became the world’s biggest geothermal power provider in the late 1990s after completing the largest IPO ever for an independent energy provider in 1996. However, this alternative energy star declared bankruptcy in 2005 and was eventually delisted from the NYSE. And as this former giant rebuilds, one tiny competitor is preparing for operations at The Geysers, as well as a second location is western Canada. That small company doesn’t trade on a major exchange — it is an independent power producer pursuing two projects that are under development One of them is a 25+ megawatt power plant at the Geysers that is projected to go online in 2010. Right now, it’s in the permitting phase. This is a unique opportunity… but unfortunately, only for a small handful of investors. — Greg Guenthner |
